Extended Learning Coordinator - San Mateo

The Extended Learning Coordinator is a 12-month staff position that will support all of the programs under the Extended Learning umbrella on the San Mateo campus. These programs are primarily non-school-day/school-year opportunities for 9-12th-grade students to engage in learning outside of the curriculum. Many of these programs are run in partnership with the parent association, and most rely on partnering with community members outside of our faculty. The Extended Learning Coordinator will work closely with the Director of Extended Learning to spearhead these programs and ensure their success.

Primary Responsibilities

The Extended Learning Coordinator supports multiple programs throughout the calendar year, with a primary focus on Nueva’s Internship Program.

Internship Program (Primary Responsibility)
The Extended Learning Coordinator leads Nueva’s Internship Program, a cornerstone of the upper school experience that connects eligible students in grades 10–12 with summer opportunities through employer partners. Responsibilities include:

  • Recruiting and marketing internship opportunities in collaboration with the parent community.
  • Representing Nueva in partnerships with employers to develop meaningful summer work experiences for students.
  • Maintaining the internship database and program website(s).
  • Coaching students in professional skills, including LinkedIn profile development, resumes, cover letters, interviewing, email communication, decision-making, and workplace etiquette.
  • Administering the internship application process and advising more than 150 students annually.
  • Ensuring completion and filing of all required government documentation.
  • Developing and implementing the annual, division-wide Internship Expo to celebrate student interns and promote opportunities for the following year.
  • Coordinating with internal programs and departments to strengthen and sustain community partnerships.

Community Service Learning
The Extended Learning Coordinator also leads Community Service Learning for upper school students. This includes:

  • Designing and implementing dedicated service learning programs in partnership with local organizations.
  • Liaising with the Extended Learning Coordinator at the Hillsborough campus regularly to align and optimize the community service learning program.
  • Coordinating community service learning programming with the upper school leadership team (including grade level Deans where appropriate).
  • Balancing the needs of students, faculty, and community partners to create meaningful service experiences.
  • Providing ongoing support for service-related activities.
  • Advising and supporting student-led service clubs throughout the year.

Summer Programs
During the summer, the Extended Learning Coordinator manages High School Teaching Assistants (TAs) for Nueva’s Summer Camp program. This role includes managing the hiring process for TAs in the spring, on-site support for all five weeks of camp, and assistance with program execution.

Additional Support
Additional responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting the Director of Extended Learning with the annual Intersession program as needed.
  • Collaborating with the Parent Association to recruit volunteers.
  • Liaising with the Operations team.
  • Supporting program management platforms such as Sched, Airtable, and CampBrain.
  • Participating in Advisory programs.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with students, families, faculty, administrators, and external partners.
  • Demonstrated openness to feedback and continuous improvement, modeling lifelong learning in both practice and subject matter.
  • Flexibility, creativity, and adaptability in a dynamic environment that values innovation, iteration, and growth through experimentation.
  • Cultural competence and a commitment to equity, inclusion, and access in student programming.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism and discretion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the job application and hiring process, including resume development, cover letter writing, interviewing, and professional communication.
  • Experience building and sustaining relationships with community partners, employers, or external organizations.

  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple programs, timelines, and stakeholders simultaneously.
  • Detail-oriented and systems-minded, with the ability to design, maintain, and improve program workflows and documentation.
  • Strong facilitation and presentation skills, including leading workshops, panels, or events.
  • Comfort working independently while also collaborating as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Ability to quickly learn new tools and processes and to work within Nueva’s “Learn by Doing” educational model.
