Position Summary:

Reporting directly to the Middle and Upper School Division Head, and working closely with the Middle School Dean, this individual has two primary roles: to serve the individual psychological needs of students and to foster the psychological health and well-being of the entire middle and school community. 

Services will include individual and group programming, wellness programs, specialized training programs, and consultation services to parents and teachers. The school counselor is available to serve as a trusted resource for students, faculty, and parents at all times

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement appropriate overall health and wellness programs in the Middle School  to discuss the key socio-emotional issues students are grappling with - including but not limited to stress management, identity formation, healthy relationships, and the general physical, emotional and mental wellness of middle school students (including Sexual health education).
  • Design and implement faculty training as it relates to the teacher’s role in providing a classroom environment that fosters an environment related to the issues above.
  • Provide short-term counseling and conflict resolution intervention as needed
  • See students for short-term and intermittent guidance and make recommendations for treatment when necessary
  • Collaborate with the middle school administration and faculty to ensure student health, wellness, and safety
  • Communicate directly with parents and outside service providers
  • Act as a crisis team member to provide consultation and manage crisis
  • Serve as a first responder to individuals and the community at large in times of crisis.
  • Provide consultation to faculty and staff regarding psychosocial issues affecting students and general adolescent development.
  • Attend all grade level teacher team meetings. 
  • Serve on the Students of Concern meeting and attend SSTs
  • Collaborate with the Grade Level Leaders and Grade Level Deans regarding pertinent academic issues.
  • As requested by the school psychologist, participate in the neuropsychological evaluation meetings to help provide appropriate recommendations.
  • Collaborate effectively and communicate clearly with administrators, teachers, parents, and students.
  • Provides quarterly education sessions and outreach to parents at each grade level on adolescent development and emotional issues impacting their children.
  • Leads faculty discussions connected to the general physical, emotional and mental wellness of middle school students.
  • Maintains and updates protocols for the faculty on responding to students in crisis.
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications (preferred):

 

  • Master’s Degree in School Counseling, or Clinical/Counseling Psychology  and/or Pupil Personnel Services Credential
  • Experience as a school counselor in an Independent school
  • Classroom experience developing and teaching SEL lessons
