Our School

Westerly School is an independent, kindergarten through 8th grade school focused on whole child education. Through project-informed pedagogy and practices, Westerly School strives to recognize and meet the needs of every student to ignite within each child a lifelong love of learning as they discover their full and unique potential. Founded in 1991 by a group of parents who wanted to provide an alternative to the Long Beach Unified School District education, Westerly remains the only non-secular K-8 independent school in Long Beach. Westerly currently enrolls around 170 students. 

 

Position Description

The Communications and Marketing Manager is responsible for leading Westerly School’s communications and marketing initiatives in alignment with the school’s mission, strategic priorities, and pedagogical philosophy. This position plays a key role in shaping the school’s public image, building community engagement, supporting enrollment and retention efforts, and communicating progress toward strategic goals. In addition, this role provides administrative support to the Head of School and serves as liaison to the Board of Trustees.

 

Responsibilities:

 

Communications

  • Ensure all messaging reflects the school’s current academic programs, student outcomes, co-curriculars, DEIJB initiatives, and community culture.
  • Track and report on progress toward communications-related strategic objectives and CAIS recommendations.
  • Write, design, and distribute a variety of internal and external communications, including:
    • Scheduled and urgent emails/texts, digital newsletters, social media content (text, photo, video), website copy, press releases, and print materials.
    • Event invitations, surveys, registration pages, and microsites.
  • Support the assets and messaging promoting family education opportunities and community-wide events.
  • Partner with the Advancement Office to support fundraising communications, annual fund messaging
  • Contribute to donor storytelling and promote alumni engagement through outreach and digital campaigns.
  • Manage school calendar:

    • Lead the development and maintenance of Westerly’s academic and community calendar.

    • Draft and finalize the annual calendar by February, incorporating LBUSD breaks and school events.

    • Coordinate review with administration, faculty, and families; update Google Calendars (internal and public-facing) as needed.

Strategic Marketing and Branding

  • Collaborate with the Director of Development, marketing team, on developing a comprehensive communications and marketing plan aligned with Westerly’s Strategic Plan and Strategic Vision.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing Team and external consultants to:
    • Refresh the school’s brand and messaging.
    • Support the launch of a new/updated website as needed.
    • Strengthen admissions marketing, engagement strategies, and retention efforts.
  • Ensure all assets and messaging reflect the school’s current branding and style guidelines.
  • Collaborate with Admissions and Summer Programs to develop marketing and recruitment materials for enrollment initiatives and seasonal priorities.
  • Collaborate with the Advancement Office to develop stewardship materials for donors and alumni

Digital Presence

  • Manage the school’s website with weekly updates and seasonal refreshes.
  • Maintain and monitor all social media platforms, using performance data to guide posting strategy.
  • Attend school events as needed to capture and archive photo/video content for storytelling and marketing use.
  • Maintain a digital archive of communications assets.
  • Support and document SEO strategies, digital campaigns, and industry trends to optimize reach and visibility.

Board of Trustees Support

  • Serve as liaison to the Board of Trustees in coordination with the Head of School and Board Chair.
  • Attend, organize and support all aspects of monthly board meetings and annual events, including scheduling, digital communications, logistics, and document preparation.
  • Maintain the digital board manual, by-laws, and archives.

General & Administrative Support

  • Provide high-level, confidential support to the Head of School, including communications assistance and project management.
  • Support the front office by fielding calls, assisting students, and helping maintain smooth daily operations.
  • Participate in school-wide events, administrative meetings, and strategic planning initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School or Director of Development.

Compensation package:

Pay range - $70,000 - $75,000 commensurate with skills and experience
