Founded in San Francisco in 2010, Alta Vista School implements an inquiry-based STEAM program serving approximately 300 students across two campuses.

After School Program Description:

The after-school program, known as BookEnds, is open to Alta Vista School students, grades Junior Kindergarten - 5th, from 3:30 until 6:00 pm. We seek to create a safe and fun space where the students can spend their afternoons engaged in free play, social growth, academic learning, and enrichment opportunities. Supporting the BookEnds program will be a priority each day from 3:30 - 6:00 pm. 

Position Description:

Alta Vista Lower School is seeking a dynamic BookEnds staff member to supervise and engage students for the 2026/27 school year. Additional responsibilities include lunch and recess supervision, helping out as needed in the school’s front office area, occasional substitute teaching, and any other duties that support the daily operations of the school. The team is looking for an experienced, energetic individual with a passion for creating a safe and positive environment for students from 2:00 - 6:00 pm, Monday - Thursday, and 1:00 - 6:00 pm on Fridays.. The team member will work closely with Junior Kindergarteners from 2:00 - 3:00 pm each day, and then with all ages from 3:00 - 6:00 pm. Applicants should be able to promote a calm and responsive demeanor, helping students work through behavior management and conflicts with peers. Punctuality, flexibility, strong communication skills and professional ethics are essential. 

Skills, Qualifications, and Experiences:

  • 2-3 years required working with diverse groups of elementary age children, ideally in an after school, camp or classroom setting 
  • High school degree or equivalent 
  • Energetic, creative, and responsible
  • Self-motivated, team player
  • Sincere interest in working with children
  • Appropriate methods and techniques in motivating and emotionally supporting children
  • Adaptable and organized
  • Competent in Google Suites, use of technology for communications 
  • Record keeping, simple arithmetic and good English usage.
  • Can safely prepare/serve/clean up snacks for students

Additional expectations and responsibilities:

  • Maintain a positive learning environment
  • Supervise, communicate and instruct in a supportive manner with JK-5 children
  • Ability to analyze situations, and adopt an effective course of action
  • Assist with the support of student behavior in accordance with Alta Vista School community agreements 
  • Communicate with classroom teachers and school administration about child behavior incidents 
  • Maintain effective work relationships with team members 
  • Follow the practices, rules, and regulations of the Alta Vista School community
  • Manage and support successful transitions for students during and from dismissal, recess, snack, and enrichment programs at Alta Vista School
  • Meet the physical requirements to safely and effectively perform duties
  • Regularly lifting or carrying 1-20 lbs.
  • Regular pushing, pulling, bending, stooping, and kneeling
  • Regularly climbing stairs and sitting or standing for 4-8 hours
  • Secure building and follow safety procedures
  • Maintain the confidentiality of school related information regarding children and staff

Compensation: $25 - $31 per hour depending on experience

Employment type: part-time 

Hours: Monday - Thursday, 2:00 - 6:00pm and Friday 1:00 - 6:00 pm, excluding holidays, special events, and breaks.
